Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
