Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
